July 1, 2004

We woke up at the Olive Branch B&B secure in the knowledge that we wouldn't be experiencing yesterday's money concerns since we were not checking out this morning and this establishment takes credit cards. Actually, aside from the the first ATM that we tried, we never had any problems getting our cards to work. Naturally the first one didn't work, though, which caused us some early concern.

The couple who own the B&B gave us a nice route to explore the towns and villages of the Cotswolds so we took off with maps in hand and ventured out. The first town we visited was Stow-on-the-Wold. This town had a huge town square where they used to sell sheep and now sell things to tourists. We mainly just wandered around without purpose, even finding ourselves cutting through back alleys and residential areas. To keep the downtown area less congested, there was parking at a local grocery store's lot. We wandered through the store afterwards to see if there were any cool odd things (to us) that was for sale but there wasn't anything too extraordinary that we noticed in our short walk through. What I did notice, though, was a complete lack of Mountain Dew, or preferably Diet Mountain Dew. I still had not seen any. Pepsi, Coke, yes. Fanta, yes. Diet drinks, yes. Sweet nectar of the gods? No.

Sign of Stow
Stow on the Wold sign at the car park. It's not all that exciting to look at, I suppose, when actual pictures will suffice, but if you are curious enough to view the full sized picture you can get a layout of the place. We parked at the car park located at the bottom right of the map.

Stow on the Wold
Unfortunately we were unable to convince everyone to move their cars but this is part of the square in Stow-on-the-Wold.

We next drove over to Burford which was really cool because the main street was on a hill. Unfortunately we were unable to find a decent parking spot after a couple runs through the village that wasn't either illegal or left the impression that I'd never summon the skills required to get the car back out of the narrow alleyway or whatever. We did turn around at a school where the boys were out playing cricket which seemed very "England" to us. So no photos of Burford. It was just pretty enough that I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Bibury was our next stop. There was a small trout stream (note: actual trout were spotted by us) and we were able to walk on a short path that led to a row of houses called "Arlington Row" that are much photographed, now including by us.
See, we saw a trout.See, I told you we saw trout!

Ronda's friend, the duck. This duck befriended Ronda. We were looking at the stream and just enjoying the pretty sights around the village when this duck came over to us. I'm sure some people feed the ducks, so it wasn't surprising that she'd come over and see if we'd feed her but we didn't have any food at any rate. The duck decided to follow us for a while, leading us to worry about it getting too near the car when we left. Eventually she did move along on her own.
